Why Men's Skin Is Different — and Why It Still Needs Care
Men's skin tends to be thicker, oilier, and more prone to clogged pores than women's skin, largely due to higher testosterone levels. Add daily shaving to the mix and you've got a recipe for irritation, ingrown hairs, and uneven texture if you're not looking after it.
The good news: a basic skincare routine doesn't need to be complicated, expensive, or time-consuming. Four steps, morning and evening, and you'll notice a significant difference within a few weeks.
Step 1: Cleanser — Start Clean
Washing your face with bar soap or shower gel strips your skin of its natural oils and disrupts its pH balance, which ironically leads to more oil production. A proper face wash changes everything.
- For oily or acne-prone skin: Look for a gel-based cleanser with salicylic acid.
- For dry or sensitive skin: A cream or foam cleanser with no fragrance works best.
- For normal skin: A balanced gel or cream cleanser does the job.
Wash your face in the morning to remove overnight oils, and at night to clear pollution, sweat, and grime from the day.
Step 2: Moisturiser — Don't Skip This
This is where most men drop off, and it's a mistake. Moisturiser isn't just for dry skin — it helps regulate oil, strengthens your skin barrier, and reduces the appearance of fine lines over time.
Keep it simple: find a lightweight, non-comedogenic (won't clog pores) moisturiser. If you shave regularly, apply it directly after for instant relief from razor burn and tightness.
- Morning: Use a lighter moisturiser, ideally one with SPF built in.
- Evening: A slightly richer formula works well, as your skin repairs itself overnight.
Step 3: SPF — The Most Important Anti-Ageing Step
UV exposure is the single biggest driver of premature skin ageing — more than diet, sleep, or stress. Sunscreen every morning, even when it's overcast, is the highest-impact skincare habit you can build.
Look for at least SPF 30. Many moisturisers include SPF, which makes this step effortless. If you're outdoors for extended periods, apply a dedicated sunscreen on top.
Step 4: Target Treatment (Optional but Powerful)
Once you've got the first three steps locked in, you can add one targeted treatment based on your specific concern:
| Concern | Ingredient to Look For |
|---|---|
| Acne / breakouts | Salicylic acid, niacinamide, benzoyl peroxide |
| Dark spots / uneven tone | Vitamin C, alpha arbutin |
| Fine lines / ageing | Retinol (use at night only) |
| Dullness / texture | AHA exfoliant (2–3x per week) |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Over-washing — Twice a day is enough. More strips your skin.
- Using hot water — Lukewarm is better. Hot water dehydrates your skin.
- Skipping moisturiser because your skin is oily — Oil and hydration are different things.
- Introducing too many new products at once — Add one thing at a time so you know what's working.
Stick With It
Skincare is a long game. You won't wake up transformed after one week, but after 4–6 weeks of consistency, the improvement in texture, tone, and overall appearance is real. Start simple, be consistent, and your skin will thank you.
